Information Technology

Course Workbook
Jim Janossy and Laura McFall, DePaul University, Chicago
2006
This workbook is designed to present a contemporary introduction to information technology. It covers a brief history of computers, hardware, software, databases, and network concepts. Building on this foundation, it explores the Internet and the World Wide Web, and how it supports modern e-business. Concluding chapters cover Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, system development methodologies including the traditional SDLC “waterfall” model and several newer methodologies, business process reengineering, software maintenance, and business continuity planning.

Thegoal in creating this workbook was to create a modern resource that could be used freestanding or with any standard text introducing information technology concepts. A workbook and web site combination is ideally suited to meeting this goal. In this arrangement, each component contributes what it is best suited to.

This workbook contains podcast scripts composed to form brief “mini-lectures” on over 50 relevant topics, note-taking copies of the highly graphic lecture slides, study questions, tear-out “modular” homework assignments, and a sample final exam.

The web site, www.ambriana.com, provides links to required readings, downloadable podcasts produced from the text here, and  PowerPoint lecture slides. The site is organized by “chapters” matching those in the workbook.
